7.30am Update on Kapiti Coast flooding event

Further update:

• It is now daylight on the Kapiti Coast and much calmer than at this time yesterday.

• There is no significant disruption to water, stormwater and wastewater services.

• Drinking water remains safe.

• If residents have concerns about the effect the flood water may have had on their home or other building they should contact the Kapiti Coast District Council.

Facts and figures on yesterday’s event:

• There was 143.6 mls total rainfall over 24 hours – nearly double the monthly average for May.

• The Waikanae River reached one in 10 year flood levels, peaking at almost 4.5metres around 11am– it’s now sitting at around 3.3m

• The Wharemauku Stream peaked at 6am and again at 11am and is now less than half the height it was at its peak

• There was widespread surface flooding across the district

• 27 properties were evacuated

• The Kapiti Coast District Council call centre received 1100 calls - most of which related to the weather event. On a normal day the call centre receives between 250-350 calls

• About 50 council operations staff were out on the job from 6am until late Thursday night and were supported by more than 40 staff from Goodmans, Downers and the M2PP Alliance

• We had more than 60 council staff and Police, Fire, Ambulance, Public Health, Downer and Electra working in our Emergency Operations Centre over the course of the day

• We had 5000 sandbags available if we needed them and we used about 2000

• Four civil defence emergency assistance centres were activated but only two members of our community required their support

• Pak n Save and Kapiti Cakes and Bakery provided food to our civil defence emergency assistance centres

• Novella Café provided food to our emergency operations centre
