Big clean up in Kapiti after flooding

Big clean up in Kapiti after flooding

Council wishes to inform the public of the follow:

· If you have or have had water in your house there is a danger of electric shock

· Houses need to be isolated before any attempt to clean or clear the property starts

· Please call Electra on 0800 567876 to turn off the power before you start any work in the house

The clean up
Council crews and contractors are out in force across the district today dealing with the aftermath of yesterday’s weather bomb that unleashed around 144 mls of rainfall in 24 hours.

Priority is being given to assisting people whose homes were flooded. The effort will then move on to properties.

· If you were evacuated from your home yesterday you should call Electra and have the property checked to make sure it is safe from any potential electrical properties BEFORE STARTING A CLEAN UP.

· Building inspectors are currently inspecting homes that were flooded and are in the best position to advise on when it is safe to return. People can contact our building team through the council call centre on 04 2964700

· If people have any concerns about whether the environment is safe from a health point of view, you can contact council’s environmental health team also on 04 2964700.

· We are still advising people from a health and safety perspective to stay away from flood waters and not allow children particularly to play in them.
