Overnight closures of Johnstones Hill Tunnels

Overnight closures of Johnstones Hill Tunnels

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that the Northern Gateway Johnstones Hill toll road tunnels will be fully closed again over two nights on 18 and 19 May, while the final stage of work to upgrade the tunnel’s traffic management systems is completed.

The tunnels were originally scheduled to close for four consecutive nights but the upgrade work has been progressing faster than scheduled.

NZ Transport Agency highways manager Brett Gliddon says the work will improve the tunnels Automated Traffic Management System (ATMS), providing better traffic and safety monitoring systems to staff at the Auckland Traffic Operations Centre (ATOC).

The information gives more up to date and accurate information about traffic flows and incidents, which helps better manage emergencies across the region’s road network and gives the travelling public the most up-to-the-minute information to help them plan their journeys.

The closure will affect tunnels in both directions overnight with detours diverting traffic to use the Hibiscus Coast Highway between Puhoi and the Silverdale interchange, adding approximately 15 minutes to journeys.

The work will be carried out between the hours of 8.00pm and 5.00am, due to reduced traffic volumes and to minimise disruption to road users.

The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their patience during the works.
