Bay of Plenty road works update May 15 – May 21


Motorists are advised to allow extra time when travelling around the Bay of Plenty as work continues on a $5million road safety improvements programme and the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL).

The NZ Transport Agency says speed restrictions, stop/go traffic management and lane changes will be in place at work sites around the region this week.

Sites where motorists can expect delays of more than five minutes are detailed below to allow people to plan ahead.

SH2 between Tauranga and Waihi, safety improvements

Stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place at up to eleven different work sites on SH2 at various times over the next three weeks.

Contractors are carrying out shoulder widening, installing new safety guard railing and felling trees close to the highway to improve safety.

Contractors will be working from 6am to 6pm and motorists travelling on this route should allow for delays of up to 10 minutes. The work started in April and is expected to be completed by early July.

SH29 between Tauranga and Kaimai summit, Soldiers Rd passing lane pavement rehabilitation

A 30km/h speed restriction and road layout changes will be in place on Tuesday May 19 to allow contractors to seal a stretch of SH29 west of Soldiers Road.

Two lanes will be kept open during the work to reduce delays however motorists are advised to drive with care and be aware of changes to the normal road layout.

A 50km/h speed restriction will be in place following the work to allow the chip to settle. Motorists should allow an extra 15 minutes when travelling on this route.

The Tauranga bound passing lane is closed to allow contractors to carry out the work safely. The work is weather dependent and will be postponed if necessary.

Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) State Highway 2 between Domain Road and Mangatawa

Construction work is ongoing on the Tauranga Eastern Link between Te Maunga and the Domain Road interchange. Drivers are encouraged to expect changes to the road layout and drive with care through this area at all times.

SH2 between Katikati and Waihi, Bridgman Lane

A speed restriction of 70km/h will be in place on a 400m stretch of SH2, as contractors repair a road slip near Bridgman Lane, near the Athenree Gorge.

This work is expected to be complete by the end of May. Motorists are advised to allow an extra five minutes when travelling on this route.

The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their patience.
