Man named following Awapuni shooting incident

Man named following Awapuni shooting incident

Police have named the man who died during a shooting incident in Awapuni, Palmerston North, last night.

He was Tyrone Rawiri Gideon, 21, of Palmerston North.

Police have since arrested and charged a 21-year-old man with unlawful possession of a firearm, who is scheduled to appear in the Palmerston North District Court later today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan, of Palmerston North CIB, said the investigation into the incident was still continuing, with scene examinations at the house where Mr Gideon was shot expected to continue into tomorrow.

"From our inquiries so far we're satisfied that this was an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the community.

At this stage, we're not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but are keeping an open mind.

"Despite the arrest today, there is still a lot of work to be done to piece together what has happened, and that will form a key focus of our inquiries over the coming days.

"While it's still early days, it is possible that further charges could be laid.

That said, there is still a lot of information to be gathered and sift through before we reach any decisions."

Mr Sheridan said Police had spoken with a number of people in connection with the incident, including those living at the house.

However, if there was anyone in the community with information that could assist, they were encouraged to contact Police, either at the Palmerston North Police station, ph 06 351 3600, or anonymously through the organisation CrimeStoppers, ph 0800 555 111.

"In the meantime we are continuing to provide the appropriate support to Mr Gideon's family at this very difficult time."
