Northwestern motorway closure during Queens Birthday weekend

22 May 2015 | NZ Transport Agency - Auckland

Northwestern motorway closure during Queens Birthday weekend

The NZ Transport Agency says closures to part of the Northwestern motorway during Queens Birthday weekend may have an impact on motorists.

The motorway will be closed in both directions between Te Atatu and Lincoln Roads from 8pm Saturday 30 May to 8am Sunday 31 May. This closure is to connect the newly built sections of Henderson Creek Bridge to the existing city and westbound bridges as part of the wider Lincoln Road Interchange Upgrade. The concrete used to connect the structures will take approximately 12 hours to pour and gain sufficient strength and vibrations from passing vehicles can impact on this process.

“Although traffic levels are quieter due to the long weekend there are still likely to be delays when the closure is put in place on Saturday night,” says the Transport Agency’s Auckland and Northland Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon. “We are encouraging people to travel outside of the closure times if possible, or consider alternative routes such as State Highway 1 and the Harbour Bridge.”

A detour between Te Atatu and Lincoln Roads will be in place during the closure and the Northwestern cycleway will remain open throughout the works.

This work is part of the Lincoln Road Interchange Upgrade Project, one of six projects either completed or under construction to link the Northwestern (SH16) and Southwestern (SH20) motorways, providing a motorway alternative to SH1, known as the Western Ring Route.

This section of the Western Ring Route is due to be completed later this year. The Lincoln road interchange improvements include widening Selwood Road bridge and widening the motorway to three lanes in each direction, including a new bridge over Henderson Creek, as well as extending bus shoulder lanes and the Northwestern cycleway.
