An information session for residents and people living near or on Woodham Road and Worcester St, east of Linwood Ave, is being held on Saturday 23 May, 11am to 1pm, at the Linwood North Primary School library. Find out more.

St Asaph Street, Central City
One lane is closed on St Asaph Street between Durham Street and Montreal Street. SCIRT’s Downer team started wastewater repair work on 20 May, which is expected to take around a month. They are working on the south side of the street first and then will move to the north side. There will be no parking available around the work site.

Gould Crescent, Alport Place and Ferry Road, Woolston – night work
• There will be a one-way system on Ferry Road heading towards Ferrymead, between Palinurus Road and the Dyers Road roundabout, while wastewater repair work is carried out on Gould Crescent, Alport Place and Ferry Road.
• The one-way system will be in place on weeknights only, between 7.30pm to 6.00am, until 5 June.

Marriotts Road/Rookwood Ave, North New Brighton
On Thursday 28 and Friday 29 May Rookwood Ave is scheduled to be closed between the Keyes Road roundabout to Marriotts Road while road repair work is carried out. There will be a detour in place via Bowhill Road, Palmers Road and Bower Ave.

ONGOING WORK
Aranui, Wainoni – high-vis central
Aranui and Wainoni are the busiest parts of Christchurch for SCIRT this year, because of the more resilient vacuum wastewater network going in place. Thanks to everyone supporting local businesses and taking it slowly on detour routes.

• The one-way system southbound on Breezes Road between Shortland Street and Cuthberts Road has now been extended to the roundabout at Dyers Road. This will be in place until around mid-June and means drivers can’t head towards Aranui via Breezes Road from the Dyers Road/Bridge Street roundabout.
• The one-way system eastbound on Eureka Street, between Rowan Ave and Cheriton Street, will now be in place until mid-June. This is for safety reasons, while SCIRT installs the final two vacuum chambers at the Rowan Ave and the Cheriton Street intersections, and while Enable is also working in the area.
• A temporary road closure will be in place on St Heliers Crescent between Guernsey Street and Woodlands Place from next week for about 10 days.
• Breezes Road is now one-way from Wainoni Road to Pages Road.

View the Aranui map on SCIRT’s website for more information on street closures and one-ways in the area. This map is updated regularly.

Sign up for fortnightly area-wide maps
SCIRT’s City Care and Fletcher teams are sending out a fortnightly map and street list via email. They will leave copies at the Aranui Community Trust on Hampshire Street and the local library on Aldershot Street. Email CIRinfo@fcc.co.nz orscirt@citycare.co.nz to go on the list.

Sparks Road, Hoon Hay
Sparks Road is one-way, westbound only from Hoon Hay Road/the BP station towards Maryhill Ave for the next two months. The detour route for city-bound drivers is via Maryhill Ave off Sparks Road. There are two schools in the area, please watch for children.

Hills Road, Edgeware – northbound only between Dudley St and Guild St
Drivers heading into town along Hills Road, south of Shirley Road, should expect to follow a detour for the next few weeks along Guild, Slater and Dudley streets. There are no right-hand turns out of:
• Edgeware Road onto Hills Road
• Hills Road onto Dudley Street
• Dudley Street onto Hills Road.

There may be additional delays on Hills Road during peak hours and we suggest allowing extra time for your journey or taking an alternative route.

Madras Street, Central City
SCIRT is currently doing road repairs on Madras Street. During this work Madras Street, between Armagh Street and Kilmore Street will be reduced to one lane. Traffic is likely to build up during peak times in this area. We suggest allowing extra time for your journey or take an alternative route.

Thanks to everyone who is planning their journeys especially at busy times and driving outside the peaks wherever possible. The best place for traffic news is the Transport for Christchurch web site for updates and maps showing one-ways and road works.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
