Injured boy remains critical

Police have completed a scene examination at a Hawke’s Bay primary school where a young boy was seriously injured after falling out of a window.

The nine-year-old Taradale Primary School pupil remains in a critical condition in Auckland’s Starship Hospital after he was transferred there from Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital on Monday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marty James said police were satisfied the incident that resulted in the boy’s injuries was an “unfortunate accident”.

“We have completed our examination of the scene and we have found nothing untoward that could have contributed to the boy’s injuries. However we still need to speak to a few more pupils to try to confirm what happened in the lead-up to the boy’s fall,” Mr James said.

Taradale Primary School Board of Trustees chairman Steve Alexander said the school was focussing on supporting the family and the wider school community. Pupils who may have been upset by the incident had been offered specialist support services.

“The family have asked everyone to respect their privacy and we have agreed to that. As expected, this is a very traumatic time for them and we are helping them in any way we can,” Mr Alexander said.

The school had co-operated fully with the police investigation and the Ministry of Education.
