Council adds more colour to lower Cuba Street

This weekend lower Cuba Street will get a brighter look thanks to some colourful street painting and complementary planting.

The street paint will go down on the two asphalt sections between the gardens at both ends of lower Cuba Street - Manners and Wakefield street entrances.

Deputy Mayor Justin Lester says after the successful transformation of Bond Street in January, the shared space environment of lower Cuba Street was next to get a spruce up.

“This project continues the theme of investing in and transforming the central city. This type of project can make an enormous difference to the way the city is perceived, and add to the vibrancy and character of Wellington.”

Trudy Whitlow, Wellington City Council’s Urban Design and Heritage Manager, says the street graphic is being used as a traffic calming measure in this shared space.

“This type of design intervention helps to slow cars and create a bright, fresh feature for the area.

“We needed to coordinate the planting at each end of the street with the cooler planting season. These works will complete the lower Cuba Street transformation project.”

The street will be closed at times on Sunday 7 June and Monday 8 June while the graphic is applied to the asphalt surfaces using special road paint and stencils. The work is weather dependent with back-up days on Sunday 14 June and Monday 15 June.
