Nutrient management key focuses at Hurunui-Waiau

Nutrient management key focuses at Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee Meeting

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee will meet on Monday 15 June in Balcairn for its monthly water management meeting.

The meeting will begin with an update from the Regional Committee, which considers issues of regional significance. This will be followed by an update from dryland farmers on the unintended consequences of the Hurunui Waiau Rivers Regional Plan.

In late May the Hurunui–Waiau zone committee endorsed its preferred option to address the issue which enables dryland farmers to continue operating without resource consent as long as they join a Nutrient Management Collective, develop a Farm Environment Plan, and implement actions to improve nutrient management.

Next, the committee will identify and discuss its community engagement approach as it moves towards sub-regional process for the zone (including Conway, Waiau, Hurunui and Waipara catchments) scheduled to commence in 2018.

The committee will then receive an update from Environment Canterbury on resource consents and monitoring and compliance in the zone. The report will focus on on how its monitoring and compliance programmes will support the ongoing delivery of the community’s water management aspirations as outlined in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).

The meeting will finish with a presentation from Environment Canterbury on regional and farm biosecurity initiatives. The presentation will cover the strategies currently in place to controls pests, the changes that need to be made, and how these will affect the community.

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee is a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and Hurunui District Council. It includes five community members, two Rūnanga representatives, and one each from Hurunui District Council and Environment Canterbury.
