Technology – The New Frontier

Technology – The New Frontier: Why it is relevant for you?

Ann Verboeket, Chair of the Kapiti Digital leadership Forum Incorporated says “this Expo is relevant for everyone. Whether we like it or not, technology is the new frontier whatever age we are. It’s happening in schools – it’s happening in business, and it’s happening as we age. We just have to know what’s in it for us.”

Ann goes on to say, that “testing your broadband speed at speedtest.net and then checking out your own location at the Chorus stand at Coastlands over the three days of the Expo are important first steps when thinking about installing Ultrafast Broadband (UFB).” CSS Technologies and Fastcom have been instrumental in getting UFB installed in to Coastlands in time for the Expo and for future connections by Mall tenants.

For John Watkeys, the Manager at Team Medical, the fact that UFB has been installed in to Coastlands is a huge bonus, as he says “the internet is an integral tool for the modern GP practice.”

He goes on to say that “Team Medical, like all GP practices, use a secure internet service to provide information to the PHO and DHB, to manage test results for patients and to securely 'back-up' all of our patient and transaction data each day.”

Team Medical is in the process of introducing the new online patient portal ‘ManageMyHealth’. John says this will “allow patients to access their medical records online, make appointments with their GP, check their Lab results, order prescription repeats, receive recall information, and in some cases have email contact with their Doctor.”

Those people working in the Health sector are aware that the ManageMyHealth Online Patient Portal (What is it? what’s in it for me as a patient) Workshop will have particular relevance for people in Kapiti as the costs of specialist appointments in Wellington escalate and ‘getting there’ becomes more difficult.

The Home Automation for Assisted Independent Living Workshop presentation is highly relevant for those people living at home, in retirement homes, or wondering what options are available to them as they plan their future. This workshop will explore some of the advances in preventative health measures that greatly improve the way we transition from the family home to a more assisted living facility as people age.

Plan to be surprised at the opportunities now available – including wearable and embedded devices that can monitor and record and transmit health information to Doctors without having to leave your home and technology devices that can enhance memory and provide GPS anti-wandering systems.

Ann Verboeket says that “Geof Heydon, Australia’s Alcatel Lucent consultant, is at the forefront of new innovations in this sector and is a talented and interesting presenter.”

To find out more about these two workshops on Fri 19 Jun at Coastlands, go to the Tech Expo Kapiti web site to see the full programme and register – http://expo.kapitidigital.org (all registrations will go in to a prize draw at the end of the Expo to win one of two HP tablets sponsored by CSS Technologies).

Keep a look out for Digital Ambassadors in their bright orange T Shirts when you visit the Expo if you need to ask any questions or to be guided around.
