Kaikōura Zone Committee focuses on local water quality and supply

The Kaikōura Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, 24 June to discuss local water management issues.

The meeting will begin with an opportunity for community members to speak before it goes on to receive updates from its Nutrient Management and Water Efficiency, and Love the Lyell / Waikōau working groups.

The committee will then be updated by the CDHB on drinking water quality monitoring in the zone and discuss water supplies in an emergency with Civil Defence. Keeping the community informed about drinking water quality and protecting supplies are key priorities for the committee.

Following this, the committee will be briefed on the EarthCheck programme and Kaikōura’s achievement in becoming a platinum certified sustainable community. The committee will discuss how water management programmes can play a role in protecting Kaikōura’s EarthCheck status.

The committee will finish the meeting with an update on Environment Canterbury’s progress to establish zone-focused staff teams. The first of these teams has been set up in Amberley to cover the Hurunui-Waiau and Kaikoura zones and other zone based teams will follow around the region.

The focus of the team will be on preparing and implementing a locally based work programme to deliver the on-the-ground work outlined in the committee’s ZIP to deliver regional priorities.

The Kaikōura Zone Water Committee was launched in mid-2011 to address local water issues and deliver the goals of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).
