Local volunteers celebrated in Upper Hutt
Local volunteers in Upper Hutt were treated to an entertaining evening in recognition and thanks for their investment into the community.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 24 JUN 2015—In the spirit of National Volunteer Week (21 – 27 June) and the upcoming Wellington Airport Community Awards, Upper Hutt City Council hosted a celebratory evening for the volunteers of Upper Hutt at Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre.
More than 120 volunteers attended the ‘Cheers to our Volunteers’ evening on 17 June, including volunteer firefighters, sports coaches and managers, mentors, administrators, leaders, advisors, volunteers working with children and young people and various other community groups and organisations that provide a service to the Upper Hutt community.
Volunteers were applauded for their selfless contribution to Upper Hutt by Mayor Wayne Guppy.
“All of you present tonight contribute invaluable and priceless services to our community. Sometimes those who benefit most from your contribution are not even aware of it. The kindness and modesty that exists in this room tonight is inspirational.”
Guest speakers Scott Millar, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand and Jo Maxwell, Community Awards Manager from Wellington Airport thanked volunteers for the work they contribute to their organisations and the greater community.
National Volunteer Week is New Zealand’s largest celebration of volunteering and civic participation, with events held across the country to recognise the contribution made by volunteers in Aotearoa. This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is ‘There is a place for you to volunteer’ or ‘he wahi mohou hei tuao’ which highlights the diversity of volunteer opportunities, volunteers themselves, and the impacts of volunteering.
