Timberlea in ‘TOP’ shape after street clean-up

Timberlea in ‘TOP’ shape after street clean-up

Streets in Timberlea were a hive of activity on Saturday June 20 as residents cleaned up, creating safer, healthier home environments while connecting with their community in the process.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 25 JUN 2015—Streets in Timberlea were a hive of activity on Saturday June 20 as residents cleaned up their neighbourhood. Tonnes of rubbish was recycled or sent to landfill from the Timberlea street clean-up.

The street clean-up was an opportunity for local residents and organisations to work together towards creating safer, healthier home environments through the removal of waste and recyclable goods. Residents had the opportunity to remove household clutter, garden waste, and other potential hazards from their homes. Recycling was encouraged with Earthlink providing volunteers and electronic waste recycling bins. Save Mart donated clothing bins while CompostNZ and Upper Hutt Bin Hire contributed to the successful removal of tonnes of waste from homes and gardens.

As part of the Together Our Place (TOP) Timberlea Safer Communities project, Upper Hutt City Council staff, Timberlea Community Centre, Safe Hutt Valley partners, residents, and community groups volunteered their time for the street clean-up.

“TOP Timberlea is all about connecting friends and whanau and bringing residents and neighbours together to create a strong, healthy, vibrant, and safe community,” says Nga Powhiri Webster, Upper Hutt City Council’s Community Projects Coordinator. “The successful street clean-up is just one example of residents turning these goals into reality.”
