Hamilton suspicious package a hoax

Hamilton suspicious package a hoax

After being called out from Auckland to investigate a suspicious package found in toilets at a Hamilton park this morning, Defence Force explosive experts have advised the item did not pose a risk to the public.

Senior Sergeant Andrew Townsend of the Waikato District Command Centre said the area around the female toilets at Melville Park were cordoned off this morning after a City Council worker reported finding a suspicious package.

“As a result an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in to examine the item and it was found to be inert, posing no risk to the public.

“Police are keeping an open mind in regards to if today’s incident is related to earlier ones in the City last week and we are appealing to the public to come forward with any information they may have.”

Mr Townsend said information can be left with the Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with the independent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
