Motorists urged to take care on Southern roads

The NZ Transport Agency says drivers need to be extra vigilant in Canterbury, Otago and Southland, with another wintry blast expected to affect many roads in these regions over the next three days.

Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright, says tomorrow, 7 July, showers are forecast, in many places, with the potential for snow down to 100 metres, possibly heavy above 200 metres.

Ms Wright says motorists should be prepared especially if they’re travelling the Alpine Passes such as SH73 Arthurs Pass, SH7 Lewis Pass and SH8 Lindis Pass, as the weather in these locations can change quickly and catch people out. Please carry chains and know how to put them on.

LINDIS PASS

Further snow showers are expected about the road this afternoon through until 6pm with and another 2 to 4cm of snow may accumulate.

ARTHURS PASS

Snow showers are expected to clear tonight (Monday). A further 5 to 10cm of snow could fall above 600 metres, with lesser amounts to 500 metres.

LEWIS PASS

Snow showers are expected above 700 metres at first, but lowering to 500 metres during Monday. Through until 9am Tuesday, a further 10 to 20cm of snow may fall above 700 metres, with 5 to 10cm to 500 metres.

Ms Wright says motorists need to be prepared for this weather. They can do this by driving to the conditions; allowing more time for their journey, slowing down, and making sure their vehicle is winter fit. Wet, slippery roads can be unforgiving of even the smallest mistakes and when travelling in snow, ice and frost it only takes a split second to lose control of a vehicle.

At this time of year, it is important people plan their journey. It starts with checking the weather forecast and road conditions, considering if you really need to travel when heavy rain, ice and snow are forecast, choose the safest route - even if it is the longest - and drive to the conditions. Drivers should also remember road closures and restrictions are to protect them and other road uses, and need to observed.
