Behaviour at after ball function in Whangarei disappoints Police

Police and the Whangarei District Council are disappointed at the behaviour at an after ball function held at the Old Library in Whangarei on June 28.

Whangarei/Kaipara Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer Sergeant Howard Clement said between 40 and 50 young people were in the vicinity of the venue in the early hours of the morning, openly drinking alcohol in breach of the liquor ban.

“Many of these intoxicated people were trying to gain entry to the venue.

Numerous incidents of minor disorder, intoxication and fights were dealt with by Police.

St John Ambulance staff also treated at least five heavily intoxicated young people, including one who was hospitalised.”

Mr Clement said damage inside the Old Library occurred and several people were evicted for drinking alcohol, intoxication or disorder resulting in the function being closed early by the organisers.

Two young men were arrested for disorderly behaviour or breach of the peace, with several warned for breach of the liquor ban.

“Due to the number of people and incidents it was difficult for Police and required eight staff working for nearly two hours to restore order and three ambulance staff an hour to assess and treat people involved.”

Police advise anyone wishing to organise high-risk events involving young people with the potential to be drinking alcohol to ensure they have the skills and resources to manage them safely, and to contact them and the Whangarei District Council early for advice.

Parents also need to take responsibility and ensure they know what their child is doing and that they are kept safe around events involving the potential for alcohol consumption and disorder.

Police are continuing with enquiries to locate the people responsible for the damage to the Old Library, and anyone with information should contact either Senior Constable Hank Van Engelen or Sergeant Howard Clement at Whangarei Police on 09 430 4500.

If anyone wants to remain anonymous they can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
