Homicide investigation begins following death of baby girl
Wellington CIB have begun a homicide inquiry
following the death of a 6-month-old baby girl.
The baby was taken to hospital from a Raumati Beach address at about 4.30 pm on Monday 6th July after sustaining a severe head injury.
She died last night at 8.30pm in Wellington Hospital.
A Kapiti man has been charged with one count of assault on a child and a homicide investigation is ongoing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson says Police are talking to all those who had contact with the baby in the time leading up to her being admitted to hospital.
“We want to build a full picture of the circumstances which led to emergency services being called to the address.”
“A post-mortem examination is due to take place later today which we expect will provide us with further information to progress our enquiry.”
“Police are keeping an open mind about the involvement of other people, and we cannot rule out further charges being laid as our enquiry continues.”
“This is a tragic death of a young baby and the investigation team is very focussed on establishing exactly what happened to her.” said Mr Ferguson.
A scene examination is continuing today at the Raumati Beach address where the baby lived involving ESR and other forensic specialists.
A further scene examination at a Waikanae address was completed last night.
The identity of the baby will be released once Police are satisfied that all next of kin have been informed.
