Joint operation targets cocaine importation

Police are appealing for information about anyone involved in the use of cocaine in the Canterbury region as part of an ongoing investigation into the importation of the Class A drug.

Three people were arrested in Christchurch last week as part of Operation Hook, a joint Police and Customs Service investigation.

“Cocaine is a highly addictive drug and causes a concerning level of harm in our communities.” says Detective Inspector Stu Graham.

“Police would like to hear from anyone in the Canterbury area who has information about the use of cocaine, or is concerned about a family member who may be using the drug.

“It is important that those using the drug seek the appropriate help and support, and that the supply of cocaine into the community is stopped” said Mr Graham.

Maurice O’Brien, Customs Service Manager, Investigations, said the joint operation shows the ability of Government agencies to disrupt criminal groups who are importing and supplying drugs in New Zealand.

“This sends a clear message that the Customs Service and our partner agencies are working together to target those who are bringing harmful drugs into our community,” Mr O’Brien said.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Christchurch last Wednesday and appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.

Two other men, aged 33 and 44, were arrested in the city last Thursday and appeared in court the following day.

All are charged with offences relating to the importation and supply of cocaine, and further charges are expected to be laid.
