Icy conditions on alpine passes continue
Icy conditions on alpine passes
continue, South Island roads require
vigilance
Drivers need to maintain vigilance in Canterbury, Otago and Southland, says the NZ Transport Agency, with the wintry blast continuing to affect many roads this week and icy conditions in several places forecast for Friday morning. (10 July)
Chains needed Arthur’s Pass
Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright says drivers on the Porters and Arthur’s Passes need to take the checkpoints seriously and not attempt to cross these alpine passes without chains in snowy, icy conditions like the past few days.
“Please carry chains and know how to use them,” she said. “People should remember road closures and restrictions are to protect them and other road users. The weather can change very quickly so preparation is essential.”
With frosts tonight, motorists should stay alert for black ice across the South Island Friday morning.
