Environment Southland visit

Environment Southland joined Horizons Regional Council on an excursion around the Manawatu, Palmerston North and Tararua on Wednesday, 8 July.

Horizons Regional Council and Environment Southland councillors focused on the Manawatu River with a number of site visits and presentations.

Horizons’ group manager corporate and governance Craig Grant says that the tour was an opportunity to share knowledge.

“We enjoyed hosting Environment Southland and showing them a little piece of our Region and being able to share and learn from our colleagues on important issues,” says Mr Grant.

“A real focus for the tour was on what we’ve achieved with the Manawatu River, what challenges we’ve faced, what we’ve learned along the way , and where we plan to go.”

“If we worked in isolation from other Regional Councils around the country, we would be missing out on the opportunity to address common issues and thus we wouldn’t be operating as effectively as we could.”

The group visited: Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, a farm in Mangatainoka, Te Apiti Manawatu Gorge; Wetlands Café, a farm in Pohangina; the old Teachers’ College monitoring site; and the Manawatu River at Fitzherbert Bridge.

Along the way, the group participated in a number of presentations on various topics, including: the history of Manawatu River, the Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI), the One Plan, nutrient management, and economic growth.

Environment Southland’s tour of the Horizons Region was part of a nationwide trip in which councillors visited Wellington, Wairarapa and Taranaki.
