Gold rating for Cable Car’s accessibility

Gold rating for Cable Car’s accessibility

Wellington Cable Car Ltd has recently been awarded a Be Welcome access gold rating – only one of two Wellington businesses to receive such a rating.

Councillor David Lee, Portfolio Leader for Accessibility, says the rating from Be Accessible, an advocacy group for people with disabilities, is a fantastic result for one of the city’s most iconic attractions.

“A million passengers a year ride the city’s Cable Car and research suggests that nearly a quarter of those people have an access need of some sort. It’s great to see that one of Wellington’s most well-known attractions has a gold rating for accessibility.”

Wellington Cable Car Limited’s CEO, Simon Fleisher, says the Cable Car is also a popular attraction for many overseas visitors, especially with elderly people from cruise ship tours, in addition to local residents including staff and students at Victoria University.

“I’m very proud of the effort our team has made to make the Cable Car accessible for everyone. We scored over 80% in every accessibility rating including vision, hearing, mobility and accessibility for parents with young children. With many of our customers being elderly tourists we wanted to make sure their use of the Cable Car was going to be as easy and stress-free as possible.”

Chairperson for the Accessibility Advisory Group, Michael Bealing, says it is wonderful to see one of Wellington’s iconic attractions achieve a high standard of accessibility. “Accessibility improvements benefit the whole community. The Cable Car has set a great example for other businesses and tourist attractions around Wellington. Well done Wellington Cable Car Limited.”
