Giving student scoops top award

A Springbank student was recognised last night at the Trustpower Far North Community Awards, for his commitment to service. Logan Alexander was named the winner of the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award for his efforts to volunteer in the school setting and out in the community.

The award is jointly presented by Trustpower and the Far North District Council, and local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the award. Runner-up was Gabrielle Harris of Northland College and finalists were Quinn Moffat of Taipa Area School, Grayson Javis of Kerikeri High School and Parehuia Tito-Paraone of Kaikohe Christian School.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award celebrates the work young people do to enrich their community, and is open to all students who have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Far North district.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says Logan’s nomination spoke of a young man who cares for deeply those around him and in the community.

“I really do love presenting the youth spirit award, because it shows everyone the future of New Zealand is in safe hands – these are teenagers who have a real grasp on what community is.

“Logan’s a fine example of this and it’s amazing what Logan finds time for, over and above his great academic results. At his school he is Head of Technical Support, a role which sees him coordinate audio support for school events ranging from drama productions to firework displays; all the while mentoring younger students to develop their audio-visual skills. On top of this though he represents his school at a number of events, helps organise numerous charity events and is an assistant coach to the school hockey team.

“Out in the community he supervises the afterschool badminton club, acting as coach, mentor and umpire. He fundraises for various charities, uses his technical skills to volunteer for the Turner Centre and he is an active member of the Bay of Islands Coastguard.

“As a coach, helpful member of Springbank School and determined fundraiser he is a very deserving Winner of this Award and it is an absolute pleasure to highlight some of his achievements here tonight”, says Somerville

Mr Alexander received a trophy, framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group or organisation of his choice (Bay of Islands Coastguard).
