Nomination call for 2015 Safety in the City Awards

Nomination call for 2015 Safety in the City Awards

Do you know a safety hero who deserves a Safety in the City award? Nominations have opened for the awards and Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown wants the Wellington public to nominate the stand-out safety heroes in their neighbourhood.

“The awards recognise people from all walks of life who have exhibited bravery in many different forms and worked to keep Wellingtonians safe,” she says. “The nominations close on Monday, 31 August.

“We recognise that Police and emergency service are our tireless safety frontline. We also want to pay tribute to those individuals or groups who have done something extraordinary or put a significant effort into keeping our city safe,” says Mayor Wade-Brown.

Australian travel writer Ben Groundwater rates Wellington sixth on his list of safest cities for travellers and Mayor Wade-Brown attributes this to the caring attitudes of Wellingtonians.

Councillor Paul Eagle, Chair of the council committee responsible for city safety, says bravery can be obvious but in most instances it goes unnoticed and unrecognised.

“A nominee could be someone you know who regularly clears our walkways so they’re safer for people to use, or someone who intervened in a bullying situation – we want to hear from you.”

Nominations that recognise a lifetime of actions taken in the interest of the safety of others are welcome, as are nominations that recognise bravery pertaining to a particular incident. Individuals and groups are equally eligible and nominees should be residents of Wellington City.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
