Taumarunui crash victim dies

A 34-year-old woman, who was a passenger in a speeding vehicle that crashed in the township of Manunui on Friday 24 July, 2015 died yesterday evening (30 July, 2015) in the Waikato Hospital.

She was Sunnie Hughes of Taumarunui.

The vehicle Ms Hughes was travelling in was witnessed driving at significant speed by a police unit and members of the public before it collided with a power pole.

She was transported to Taumarunui Hospital from the scene with serious injuries, and then onto Waikato Hospital.

The driver, a man aged 29, sustained minor injuries and police are continuing to speak with him, and other witnesses.

Taumarunui Police, supported by the Serious Crash Unit are continuing to investigate the crash to determine what other factors led to it.

No charges have been laid at this stage.

The death has now been referred to the coroner.
