Canterbury Region’s finest homes announced

Canterbury Region’s finest homes announced

A new build and a renovation in Christchurch have been revealed as this year’s top Canterbury homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year.

Metzger Builders (MBL) took out four regional awards with the Clearwater home, including a Gold Award and category win for the Carters $1 million - $2 million award, as well as the Canterbury Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the 2015 House of the Year. The company won the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award for the same property.

Metzger Builders (MBL) also took home the Craftsmanship Award, Outdoor Living Award and a Gold Award as well as overall category win for the Builder’s Own Home Award for another property.

Paul Reed Homes was awarded the Supreme Award for Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2015 Renovation of the Year, as well as a Gold Award and overall category win for the SafetyMate Renovation Award over $500,000.

The judges called Metzger Builders’ Supreme Award winner a stand out home with outstanding features.

“This was an impressive build with a complex, challenging design. The variation of material use, stone work and interior panel work required a lot of skill,” they said.

“Clever innovations including access to some rooms concealed behind wall panels instead of traditional door openings made this home a stand out. This build was a case study in builder, architect and client working together to achieve the best result.”

The judges praised Paul Reed Homes for their Christchurch renovation, saying the team maintained the character of the original home to an impressive standard.

“Built on the hills overlooking Christchurch, this was an outstanding renovation which came with its fair share of complexities and challenges,” they said.

“Incredible skill and planning was required to hold the house up while the ground floor was dug out underneath and replaced with a whole new foundation and brick cladding.

“Looking at this home, you wouldn’t know it went through a major renovation. It looks substantial, solid, well-crafted and complete – a credit to the builder and a striking renovation.”

The results were revealed at a gala dinner on Friday 31 July at Wigram Airforce Museum in Christchurch. The winning builders were recognised by members of the Canterbury Registered Master Builders and members of the local building industry.

There were 38 Gold Award winners from the Canterbury region which will now be eligible, alongside Gold Award winners from up and down the country, to become National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for Renovation of the Year and House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.

The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, James Hardie, GIB, Nulook, SafetyMate, Carters, ITM, Plumbing World, Resene, Westpac and Mitre 10.
