This ‘Sporting’ Norfolk Island…

When you think about it, this little island is definitely sports mad. A wet weekend can spell misery across countless homes if it results in cancelling a beloved sport! However our sporting clubs are not only enthusiastic about getting locals into their sport, but many are also involved in organising for visiting groups to be included in annual tournaments and championships. For visitors, it can feel like they’re already winners as they combine a love of their chosen sport with a fantastic holiday on Norfolk Island. And as Islanders keep showing through their success at numerous International Games – they can offer some great friendly competition!

There are no less than thirteen sporting events that the Norfolk Island Travel Centre has on its annual calendar. And this is aside from non-events such as sports fishing and fitness holidays that can be accessed year round.

Perhaps one of the most popular sports is lawn bowls and the Norfolk Island Bowling Club invites players to join them throughout the year in the South Pacific Pairs, TAB Classic Triples and Bounty Lawn Bowls (4’s). With a club motto of “there are no strangers, just friends we haven’t met” visiting bowlers will assured of joining very friendly comp’s.

For the more mature sportsman or woman, there are two key veterans’ tournaments to get into. The Norfolk Island Cheryl Tennis Club runs Veterans Tennis Championships in the first week of April, catering for 4 age divisions between 10 to 70+. Play occurs on the Club’s sand based astro turf courts and the socialising happens in the Club House with this seriously fun club!

Golf on Norfolk Island is played on one of the most beautiful courses you are ever likely to encounter. Located within World Heritage listed Kingston, the Norfolk Island Golf Club offers a Veterans Golf Tournament from 9-12 February 2016 and is open to players aged 50years and over. The challenge is not to be distracted by the views on the 4th hole as you hit over the cliff edge to either land on a small green – or the beach below!

January see’s Norfolk’s newest sport – outrigger canoe racing – bring the New Year in with all the excitement of 6km and 12km races, and a challenging round-the-island relay. Our local Wa’a Outrigger Club has not only managed to get a new club with active paddlers but to host an event that brings international paddlers to the island. This is an event not only for paddlers, but spectators alike!

Pistol shooting, Clay target Shooting, 3D Archery - and even a Fly In, Model aero challenge are amongst the other popular events run each year. Of course coming to Norfolk Island for a sporting event doesn’t mean that non-sporting spouses and friends will have nothing to do. The island has so much on offer including swimming, snorkelling, shopping and walks through the National Park. Our history is astounding - in fact its World Heritage listed in Kingston, the centre of our penal settlement past.
