$165,000 voted for three heritage buildings
A Wellington City Council committee has voted to grant $165,000 towards the seismic-strengthening and conservation of three heritage-listed Wellington buildings.
The Transport and Urban Development Committee granted the money from the Council’s Built Heritage Incentive Fund to:
• New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) Building, 26 The Terrace - $100,000. The grant will contribute to the strengthening of this quake-prone building and the retention of its façade. The building, by architect B F Kelly, is a fine example of Stripped Classical design. The building is important as one of a group of five period buildings at the north end of The Terrace – an area now dominated by modern high-rise office buildings. The building also has strong historical value given it has been occupied by the NZMA since it was constructed in 1938.
• The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) Meeting House, 7 Moncrieff Street, Mt Victoria - $50,000. The building has been the headquarters of Wellington’s Quaker community since it was built in 1929. The house was designed in the neo-Georgian style by noted architect William Gray Young.
• St George’s Church Vicarage, 40 Ferry Street, Seatoun – seismic assessment and design - $15,000. The 1924-vintage unreinforced masonry building was designed in the English Domestic Revival style by architect P H Graham.
Last week’s decisions were the first of three ‘rounds’ of the incentive fund for 2015-16. A total of $750,000 is available for allocation this year.
The successful applicants have 18 months to undertake the work and provide evidence of completion before the allocated funding is paid out.
