Grants to help Aucklanders be more active

Grants to help Aucklanders be more active

Applications are open for Auckland Council’s regional sport and recreation grant funding programme for organisations inspiring and encouraging Aucklanders to be more active.

The 2015/16 programme was recently confirmed by the Auckland Council’s Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee.

A total of $507,000 is available to support regional organisations in their efforts to inspire and help Aucklanders to be more active improve their health and wellbeing through access to activities or initiatives. This grant programme is for projects with an regional impact and complements local grant funding available through local boards.

Committee chair, Councillor Christine Fletcher says the fund is an important source of investment to create the changes and opportunities needed for Aucklanders to be more active, for the organisations enabling sport and recreation outcomes to be well supported and the system of sport and recreation in Auckland to be effective.

“With sport and recreation participation supported by 12 million volunteer hours annually, and the sector providing important and wide-ranging outcomes from health and wellbeing to economic development and community cohesion, it is critical there are systems in place to provide support.”
Outcomes sought through the fund are:
Participation
• There are affordable and accessible options for participation in informal physical activity, recreation and sport.
• Our diverse communities enjoy healthy and active lifestyles.
• Māori participation in sport and recreation activities has increased.
Infrastructure
• Participants in a wide range of physical activities, recreational activities and sports are equally able to access suitable facilities and outdoor environments (this grant programme will not fund capital works).
The fund will target:
• Supporting more equitable access to those sport and active recreation activities that do not currently benefit from dedicated or council-subsidised facilitiesand outdoor environments.
• Programmes that enable children and young people to develop skills which will help them have lifelong participation in sport and recreation.
• Providing or supporting easier and more affordable access to populations with low participation rates in sport and recreation, particularly:
o Māori aligned to the draft Māori Sport and Recreation Plan – Te Whai Oranga.
o Children and young people aligned to I Am Auckland Strategic Action Plan.
o Populations with health and wellbeing needs.
o Those facing other barriers, such as access to transport and information.
The programme supports implementation of the Auckland Sport and Recreation Strategic Action Plan, which was developed in partnership with the wider recreation and sport sector, and contains priority actions for both the sector and Auckland Council.

For fund criteria and to how to apply, go to the council’s website, aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/funding. Applications close 14 September 2015.
