Call for local bakers to help animals – Cupcake day for SPCA

So you think you can bake? Wellington SPCA is calling all cupcake cooks and keen bakers to take part in their annual fundraiser to help the animals.

Sweet-toothed locals are joining the fight against animal cruelty this Monday by donning aprons, baking cupcakes and selling them to friends, family and colleagues to support the annual Cupcake Day fundraiser for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Last year Cupcake Day raised over $30,000 for Wellington SPCA with every cent going towards helping the animals.

Wellington SPCA Chief Inspector Ritchie Dawson says this year the organisation is looking for cupcake cooks of all ages and baking levels to take part on Monday, 24 August.

“It really doesn’t matter about the level of your baking skills. Cupcakes are easy enough for non-bakers to whip up and to make and it is a fun and easy way to make a real difference to the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned animals that need our help.”

It’s easy to get involved, and you can take part as an individual, school or team.

And for those who would rather eat the products than bake them there is a way to participate.

“We will be holding a cupcake stall outside Farmers on Lambton Quay on Monday where hundreds of donated cupcakes from many well-known businesses in the Wellington community will available. So grab your wallets and come by from 7am to show your support. Why not come and grab some for a delicious morning or afternoon tea shout for staff!” he says.

One Wellington organisation supporting the cause is Wellington City Council, which is repeating its annual ‘Cupcake Idol’ competition throughout the organisation.

The Council is encouraging eager home bakers among its staff to whip up a batch of cupcakes to be judged by Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Wellington SPCA’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager Mark Collyns. Remaining cupcakes are sold to colleagues, with the last two year’s efforts raising over $700 for the SPCA.

“Wellington SPCA is a real success story and Cupcake Day is a delicious way of raising funds and awareness for this important charity,” says Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

Mr Dawson says that the SPCA does not receive Government funding for its unique charitable services so the money raised by the community on Cupcake Day will help fund the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of the thousands of animals in need of our help each year.

It’s not too late to take part and registering is easy, go to www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz and click register. Once you register you’ll receive a Cupcake Day kit with lots of ideas and inspiration and hints and tips to make your event special. You can also donate to SPCA, set up a personalised fundraising page and return your funds via the website.

Mark Collyns and Mayor Wade-Brown will be judging the Council’s ‘Cupcake Idol’ competition at 2.00pm, Monday 24 August at the Wellington Central Library’s Mezzanine Room, Victoria Street. Media who would like to attend can contact Warren Inkster from the Mayor’s Office on 021 650 195. Yes, there will be animals present!
