Local board shares concerns over Oruarangi SHA

The Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board is disappointed at the outcome of a community petition to revoke the Oruarangi Special Housing Area in Mangere.

Following the presentation of a petition by Save Our Urban Landscape (SOUL), Auckland Council’s Governing Body voted 12-5 against Councillor Cathy Casey’s Notice of Motion recommending support for the SHA be revoked.

“We share the community’s concerns and maintain our objection to this SHA, as we have since it was first proposed,” says Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board Chair Lemauga Lydia Sosene.

“However we continue to support an outcome that includes the aspirations of SOUL and the Ihuamatao Community.

“We hold the Mayor to his response to Councillor Casey in yesterday’s meeting and welcome the opportunity to sit at the discussion table to find the best way forward.”

The Oruarangi SHA is on the airport side of Mangere, adjacent to both the Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve and one of the last liveable Māori papakāinga in New Zealand.
