Annual Breakaway Festival of Cycling programme announced

Upper Hutt’s annual cycle festival is about to kick off with events and fun for all ages.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 31 AUG 2015— The 2015 Breakaway Festival of Cycling programme for has been released, offering a range of cycling events for ages and abilities during the month of September.

Upper Hutt’s Breakaway Festival of Cycling is now in its third year, and this year focuses on getting more people involved in cycling. Events are being held for primary and secondary school students, and, at the end of the month, a ‘Brake-Fast’ bike to breakfast event with free breakfast and coffee for participants.

There are also family and community events run by locals, intended to showcase the different types of cycling options and encourage people the to have a go.

“We are really pleased to be able to offer a diverse programme to our local community,” says Ellie Davidson, Team Leader of Activation. “it’s also great to see the community getting in behind the festival and support it with events of their own.”

The first event kicks off on Wednesday 2 September and the last is on Wednesday 30 September.

The programme includes:

• Secondary Schools ‘Intro to Track Cycling’ – A half-day track cycling introductory session with Port Nicholson Poneke’s track cycling club. Open to Upper Hutt colleges and intermediates.

• Community Cycling group – A social cycling group. The rides are up to 2 hours, mostly flat and followed by a coffee stop.

• Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX Club Open Day – An open day at our local club where people of all ages can have a go at BMX. Riders must have a helmet,
• Hutt Valley Thunderbolts Schools Challenge – An annual event that is fast becoming one of the most anticipated inter-school sports days on the sports calendar.

• Wellington Secondary Schools Road Cycling Champs – Inter-school event for secondary schools hosted in Upper Hutt.

• Primary Schools Wheel-a-thon Day – The school with the highest percentage of participation will win a H2O Xtream Pool party and $300 Maidstone Sports voucher, with 2nd prize winning a $300 Maidstone Sports voucher.

• Bike to Breakfast ‘Brake-fast’ – A free family based event held during the school holidays. Bike to a free breakfast at the council buildings.
