Bus an interesting feature in Toitū OSM exhibition

Friday, 11 September 2015

A bus with long links to the Otago Peninsula is sure to be a drawcard at an upcoming Toitū Otago Settlers Museum exhibition.

In a collaborative venture, the Otago Peninsula Museum’s Bus No.22 will be part of the Life on the Edge – Otago Harbour Communities exhibition, which opens on 26 September.

The bus was originally part of the Peninsula Motor Service fleet, which operated between 1924 and 1964. Based in Portobello, the fleet provided commuter services to Dunedin and also provided school and tour bus services.

The bus is now a significant part of the Otago Peninsula Museum’s collection. Museum President Warren Morris says, “Bus No.22 was found in a very poor condition at the old Peninsula Motor Service garage in Hereweka Street, Portobello. In 2007 it was restored by local resident Tom Churchill. It is the only original Peninsula bus left in Otago.”

Mr Morris says the bus represents an important part of the harbour’s heritage.

Toitū OSM Visitor Experience Manager Kirsty Glengarry says it has been a pleasure to work with the Otago Peninsula Museum.

“The bus cab promises to be one of number eye-catching features in the exhibition, all helping to tell the rich harbour community story.”
