People warned to stay away from all Christchurch beaches

People are warned to keep away from all Canterbury beaches and river mouths until early Saturday morning as tsunami alerts are raised following the 8.3 magnitude Chile earthquake.

The tsunami risk is not expected to be significant for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, with experts predicting waves of up to 40cm from midnight tonight. However, people are warned to stay away from all beaches and river mouths in the region for 24 hours after the first waves arrive.

Christchurch Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Manager Murray Sinclair says the tsunami risk was not significant for the region, but residents and boaties should still take care.

"The Chilean earthquake is likely to create some waves in and around Christchurch, particularly in the harbours of Banks Peninsula where the water is likely to be choppy for up to 24 hours after the waves arrive just after midnight tonight. Water currents are also likely to be affected so people should stay away from the Coast and waters.

"We are keen to get the message to as many people as possible, in particular we want to ensure whitebaiters around the Waimakariri and other river mouths keep away from the water tomorrow.

"Christchurch CDEM will continue to monitor the local situation and provide updates if and when they are needed."

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management issued a tsunami warning for East Cape, Chatham Islands, Coromandel and Banks Peninsula at midday today, following the Chile earthquake which struck at 10.54am NZ local time.

People in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula coastal area are advised to:

1. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)

2. Stay off beaches and shore areas

3. Do not go sightseeing

4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends

5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates

6. Follow instructions of local civil defence authorities
