Canterbury Police are now able to name the victim of the fatal crash which occurred at around 5pm last night on SH1 Main South Road near Dunsandel.

He was 20 year old Finlay William Dunning who lived in the Methven area.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Canterbury Police and Victim Support are working with Finlay's family.

Sergeant Franco Lovrich says the north-bound Toyota Surf appears to have collided with the drivers side of the south-bound Subaru station wagon Finlay was driving.

"Finlay was the driver and sole occupant of the Subaru.

The three men in the Toyota were taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance and kept in overnight while their injuries were assessed."

Canterbury Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
