New Zealand’s largest golf tournament to be hosted in Upper Hutt

The Royal Wellington Golf Club scores big as venue for the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Championship.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 OCT 2015—Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy says awarding one of the world’s leading amateur golf tournaments to the Royal Wellington Golf Club is exciting news for the club, the city, and the region.

The Heretaunga Championship Course at Royal Wellington has been chosen as the venue for the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Championship (AAC), one of the largest international amateur golf tournaments in the world.

Mayor Guppy says the tournament is jointly sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and the world’s most famous golfing institutions—the Masters Tournament, and The R&A.

“This tournament will not only put the Heretaunga course on the world map, it will also give 10 New Zealand amateur golfers a shot at some of golf’s biggest events.”

The winner of the tournament gets a start in the following year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and a chance to play in The Open Championship.

“One of the great things about this tournament is that in the best tradition of the amateur game, the AAC is open to the public and free to attend.

“With a live broadcast to more than 160 countries and a sizeable international media contingent, there’ll be a great opportunity to position Upper Hutt and our region on the golf tourism map.
