8-year-old boy killed in highway crash

Police are continuing to investigate a crash on SH5 at Tapapa that claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy.

The incident occurred at approximately 4.50pm (Monday, 5 October) about 500m west of Whites Road.

Initial police enquiries indicate that a Toyota utility containing a man and his 8-year-old son had broken down.

The father crossed the road to get some water for his vehicle’s radiator leaving his son in the vehicle.

It appears that the boy decided a short time later to follow his father across the road with tragic consequences.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla vehicle that collided with the young boy was not injured.

The name of the boy will be released once police are satisfied all next of kin have been notified.
