New Plymouth bus safety improves with video cameras

New Plymouth bus safety improves with video cameras installed

Taking a bus in New Plymouth is about to get even safer when video cameras are installed on urban buses.

Taranaki Regional Council Transport Services Manager Chris Clarke says the cameras will be installed on eleven urban Citylink buses by November 1.

“Passengers and drivers can feel secure knowing we’ll have a record of what happens inside and outside our buses, which we can review if needed.”

Up to eight cameras will be installed on each bus, providing full coverage of the interior of the bus, along each side, and the road ahead, Mr Clarke says.

“It means the public can sit back and relax while travelling on our public transport, knowing we’ve got it covered on the road and inside.”

The cameras are being installed mainly to give passengers and drivers more security when travelling on the public buses, which cover Waitara, New Plymouth and Oakura, Monday to Friday. There had been three minor accidents within the last three months involving Citylink buses and private cars in New Plymouth, where it would have been beneficial to have a recording showing what had occurred. , Public buses must have at least three cameras installed, under urban bus requirements implemented by the New Zealand Transport Agency), Mr Clarke says. It’s a real bonus with Tranzit installing up to eight, it’s extra cover and security.”

The camera recordings will be monitored, saved and reviewed if there is an incident, by Tranzit which operates the buses on behalf of the Council.
