Steampunk the Thames
Steampunk the Thames
Something has been stirring deep within Thames' memory, with flashes of Victorian and Edwardian scientific romances sparking the imagination of the town's engineering and artistic communities.
The town's past, including the famous Thames School of Mines & Mineralogical Museum, has sprung back to life, mingling with futuristic and parallel-world versions of itself to form a new festival called Steampunk The Thames.
For those not too familiar with the term, Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.
The festival was created to celebrate Thames' own blend of art, heritage and culture; inspire and stimulate local talent; attract visitors to the town for a rollicking good time.
Last year's Steampunk Circus and Street Carnival was a huge success as was the Bella Street Steampunk Ball. Both have returned with a few new events, so there is no excuse to not get your 'steampunk on' and have a rollicking good time.
We feature Steampunk the Thames in our Summertimes Magazine, page 63.
