Horizons to monitor river levels over long weekend

Horizons Regional Council operations and emergency management staff will be keeping an eye on river levels across the Region over the long weekend.

Horizons group manager operations Allan Cook says while there is further rain forecast for the Tararua, Rangitikei and Whanganui catchments, at this stage there are no areas of concern.

“Currently we are only predicting between 50 and 90 millimetres of rain for these catchments over the next 22 hours. However, we will have staff monitoring river levels and on standby to respond over the long weekend should the situation change.”

Mr Cook says Horizons’ hydrologists are working closely with Metservice to keep up-to-date with weather predictions.

“The forecast is currently changing every 12 hours but we would expect the majority of rainfall to move on by the end of Saturday. Following this we aren’t expecting any further rain until Monday,” he says.

Members of the public are advised to take care while driving this long weekend and check the AA’s website, http://maps.aa.co.nz/traffic/roadwatch for information on road conditions.

Up-to-date information on river heights and rainfall is available via Horizons 24 hour toll-free Waterline 0508 4 FLOOD or via our website www.horizons.govt.nz For weather forecasting information please see www.metservice.co.nz
