Southland leads data management conversation
People from around the country will be joining Environment Southland staff tomorrow (Wednesday) at an information management conference being held at the Ascot Park Hotel.
Staff representing nearly all regional councils, many district councils, government agencies and some businesses are attending the conference, which was initially an idea to ensure Environment Southland staff knew what was coming in terms of data requests.
Director of Policy, Planning and Regulatory Services Vin Smith says this area is becoming incredibly important for reporting and sharing information with our communities.
“Regional councils and government agencies are coming under increasing pressure to resolve data questions and discover how best to acquire, manage, analyse, report and disseminate data, while managing the associated costs.”
The conference aims to share knowledge and start some conversations on these complex issues. “It’s going to be important for councils and government departments in particular to have a solid understanding of what technologies are available and the information demands of the future,” Vin says.
Speakers at the one-day conference are Linn Murphy (Land Information New Zealand), Paul Stone (Department of Internal Affairs), Sean Hodges (Horizons Regional Council), Alison Stringer (Ministry for the Environment), Wayne Stiven (Environment Canterbury), Caroline Rowe (Land, Air, Water Aotearoa), Andre Post (Ministry for Primary Industries) and Alexander Kmoch (GNS).
