Busy night for police as All Blacks win Rugby World Cup

Rugby fans around the country were out and about on Sunday morning as they celebrated the All Blacks win over Australia in the Rugby World Cup final.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Prevention, Superintendent Dave Trappitt, said “Police around the country reported a busier than usual Sunday morning with large numbers gathering to watch the game from early Sunday morning.
He said the Police focus throughout the tournament had been on prevention, trying to ensure that people enjoyed the game and then got home safely.

“Staff have been out and about on the roads and had a visible presence in the bars and clubs that opened for the games since the Rugby World Cup kicked off in September.

“We have worked closely with a range of licensed premises and organisations to ensure hosts have acted responsibly and patrons enjoyed themselves safely during the games.

However, it will likely be several weeks post-tournament before we have a full picture of the impact of Rugby World Cup, including the impact on Police resources as a result of the extended trading hours made available to licensed premises for the entire tournament.
