Auckland Women’s Centre to host 'Suffragette'

A special advanced screening of SUFFRAGETTE is being organised by the Auckland Women’s Centre on November 15th. Suffragette is the first feature film to tell the story of the working class women at the turn of last century Britain who risked everything in the fight for equality and the right to vote.

Guest speaker, Annie Newman, from the Pay Equity Coalition, Auckland will lead a discussion prior to the screening about the gender pay gap which is currently still sitting at a whopping 14%.

SUFFRAGETTE is an intense drama that tracks the story of women's fight for the right to vote in Britain in 1912. Mulligan plays Maud, an ordinary, working-class woman who finds herself becoming an activist despite the risks of being part of the brave movement. The film shows the women holding rallies and starting fires, “getting beaten, jailed and tortured; socially ostracised and unemployed, as a result. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational.

‘Today in New Zealand we are seeing a broad movement of feminism fighting for equal pay for work of equal value’ says Leonie Morris, Manager at the Auckland Women’s Centre.

It is 122 years since NZ women got the vote and our journey to equal pay has slowed down. For the 2nd year running we are still 14% behind on average hourly income. The time has come to pay women 100% for the work they do – pay the job not the gender.’
The Auckland Women’s Centre continues its work to support the wellbeing and empowerment of the women in Auckland through crucial support services and advocacy.
