Turf team tips to help you keep your grass green

TURF TEAM TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP YOUR GRASS GREENER

4 November 2015

The man who manicures some of the Waikato's most hallowed turf is sharing his knowledge with the region's residents.

As part of the sub-regional Smart Water programme Karl "KJ" Johnson – Turf Manager for Hamilton's Seddon Park and FMG Stadium Waikato - fronts a series of short online videos entitled "Turf Team Tips".

The videos see Mr Johnson offering basic advice on how the region's home owners can maintain good quality lawns during the driest part of the year – when much of the region is under water restrictions with limit sprinkler use.

"Kiwis are really fond of their lawns, but in the summer, when water restrictions come into effect, keeping lawns lush becomes a real challenge," Mr Johnson says.

"With Turf Team Tips, we aim to help out home owners with some simple advice on maintaining a good healthy lawn. We look at the types of grass you can sew and grow, the tools and equipment to manage it, and some techniques you can use to water your lawn effectively when restrictions allow use of sprinklers."

Smart Water Co-ordinator Sally Fraser says the project aims to inform and entertain the region's residents, and use available expertise and knowledge.

"KJ is very well-known across the region, he's an expert in the turf management field, and we're really excited to be able to share some of his knowledge with Waikato residents," she says.

"We've worked hard to make Turf Team Tips interesting, engaging and fun, and we're confident people who tune in will gain some valuable information."

The Smart Water programme aims to encourage the region's residents to conserve water during the hottest part of the year, and increase community understanding of the importance of saving water, one of our most precious natural resources.

The Smart Water Starts with You! sub-regional summer campaign aims to make long-term change to how we use water and is a joint venture between Waikato District Council, Hamilton City Council, and Waipa District Council.
