Class and Individuality Win Style Award

Class and individuality win Sofitel Luxury Hotels Style Award at Ellerslie’s Melbourne Cup Day Races

More than 4,000 racegoers gathered at Ellerslie racecourse yesterday to embrace another trans-Tasman celebration, the Melbourne Cup.

With 10 races at Ellerslie throughout the day, the crowd stopped to cheer on the horses in the Melbourne Cup at 5pm.

Earlier in the day, long time Ellerslie racegoer, Di Goldsworthy and first time race attendee, Mathew Wang, won the Sofitel Luxury Hotels Melbourne Cup Style Award.

Winning a $2,000 prize package each, the duo was thrilled and surprised by their win.

Judges Renee Wright of TVNZ and Janetta Mackay, Viva Beauty Editor, said there was a high standard of racewear on course at Ellerslie. “It was great to see people who put a lot of thought into pulling together the perfect Melbourne Cup outfit,” Renee said.

Di Goldsworthy, who has been attending Ellerslie racedays for 40 years, epitomised beautiful racewear from top to toe. “From her stunning hat to her pastel colour palette, Di’s outfit was all class. While Mathew stood out in his classic and dapper raceday style,” she added.

Another Ellerslie fashion winner also did well at Melbourne Cup yesterday – Charlotte Moor, winner of the Viva Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie in March this year, was first runner up in yesterday’s Myer Fashions on the Field Women’s Racewear, following a second placing in the competition at Saturday’s Derby Day.

Combined with the first and third placing in the Melbourne Cup race of New Zealand-bred horses, Prince of Penzance and Criterion, it has been an excellent week for Kiwis.
