Teenagers charged with aggravated robbery

Canterbury Police have made three arrests following an investigation into a reported robbery at New Brighton beach, near the pier, at around 7pm on Tuesday 13 October 2015.

Detective Sergeant David Parker says the victim of the robbery, a 27 year old Turkish man, was in New Zealand on a working holiday when the incident occurred. “Police understand that the victim was befriended by three men who took him to the beach where he was assaulted and had his wallet and cell phone stolen.”

The victim suffered multiple cuts, grazes and bruises to his knees, hands, face and head.

Three teenage males, one aged 19 and two aged 17 years old, have been arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. They are due to appear in Christchurch District Court this week.

“The victim has since left the area to take up employment elsewhere in the south island. New Zealand is a safe place to visit and New Zealanders are well known as being friendly, approachable and happy to help anyone no matter where they are from. However, opportunistic criminals the world over take advantage of situations such as unattended bags at social events, valuables in parked cars or befriending people who are on their own for their own gain” explained Detective Sergeant Parker.

“This type of violence in broad daylight and in a place that is enjoyed by families, kiwis and overseas visitors is unacceptable. Police would like to thank those that provided CCTV imagery and information. Senseless actions such as these will not be tolerated and Police encourage anyone who witnesses such behaviour to call 111 straight away so those responsible can be held to account.”

As this matter is now before the courts Police will not be providing any further comment.
