Dog Bylaw recommendations to be presented at Council

HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

9 November 2015

Dog Bylaw recommendations to be presented at Council

In December, Council will consider a range of recommendations presented by the Policy and Regulatory Subcommittee on the Dog Control Bylaw.

The Subcommittee will recommend dogs be allowed in Jackson Street, Petone on-leash, following strong support in public submissions. The Subcommittee is recommending a review of this in one year.

The fenced dog park pilot on Pohutukawa Street will not go ahead after the site was deemed unsuitable, and the proposed new dog exercise area on Oakleigh Street Reserve will not proceed. Council will explore other options in the city.

Other recommendations include adding a new exercise area in Days Bay, with a review in one year, and a seasonal ban along some areas of Eastbourne beaches during the breeding season of the banded dotterel bird.

Close to 250 submissions were received during consultation, with around 50 of those verbally presented to the Subcommittee over two hearings.

The Dog Control Bylaw was last reviewed in 2005, and the latest review seeks to further refine it to achieve the right balance of dog exercise and dog prohibition areas across the city.
