Sunshine and clear skies forecast for Cup Day

Following a balmy start to New Zealand Cup and Show Week on Saturday at the Sothys New Zealand 200 Guineas Day, fine weather looks set to continue for tomorrow's Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington Raceway.

A high of 24 degrees Celsius is predicted for one of the highlights of Canterbury's social calendar and a crowd of more than 20,000 is expected at Addington for the prestigious two mile harness race.

Iconic kiwi band Salmonella Dub will be performing live on the sold out Lindauer Lawn and special guest's the Wilson sisters from Keeping up with the Kaimanawas will be in attendance.

In conjunction with Addington Raceway, Christchurch City Council is reminding punters that an alcohol ban will be in place in and around Addington Raceway and Events Centre from 9am to 10pm tomorrow. Addington is a fully licensed premise.

The police-enforced ban applies to the area bounded by Blenheim Road, Moorhouse Avenue, Lincoln Road, Wrights Road and Matipo Street.

Christchurch City Council Community Arts and Events Unit Manager Richard Attwood says Council is promoting a responsible attitude to drinking during the week.

“The liquor ban is just one of a wide range of initiatives from Addington Raceway designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. It is also the first New Zealand Cup and Show Week since the lower alcohol limit came into force so it pays to plan your transport ahead of time,” he says.

“Addington’s Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day is one of the busiest days of the year for Canterbury, and it’s in everyone’s interests that all race-goers act sensibly so that everyone can enjoy the day.”

Addington is providing a free drop-off bus service for patrons leaving the course. Red Bus will drop patrons to Riccarton Road, near Trevinos Restaurant and outside McDonald's on Papanui Road, Merivale. The bus service will leave the Wrights Road end of the course from 5.30pm every half an hour through to 7.00pm.
