Cup Day and night Police resources increased

Cup Day and night Police resources increased

Canterbury Police are hoping for a well behaved, good natured crowd at Addington Raceway and the central city again this year.

Inspector Peter Cooper, Canterbury Police District Deployment Manager, says that a big focus tomorrow will be on minimising alcohol related incidents. “We will have high visibility patrols throughout the city, enforcing the 9am-10pm liquor ban in Addington and a number of checkpoints will also be set up.”

“With warm sunny weather forecast for tomorrow we expect it to be busier at the races than last year. We want everyone to have a fun time but please don’t overdo the alcohol. Make sure you eat food and drink water or non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day so you stay hydrated and minimise the effects of both the weather and alcohol.”

“Being intoxicated is not acceptable and neither is being arrested or driving drunk. Anyone caught breaching the liquor ban covering several streets around Addington Raceway or any other liquor ban can expect to be prosecuted” explains Inspector Cooper.

“Keep your wallets, phones and credit cards safe. An unattended bag is tantamount to inviting an opportunistic thief to help themselves. If you see anyone behaving suspiciously report it straight away. If you lose your credit cards phone your bank straight away so they can deactivate them.”

The busiest times for Police call-outs for disorder and violence on Cup Day are typically between 5pm and 10pm.

“Plan ahead and use public transport, book taxis with friends or be a good mate and take one for the team by being a sober driver. Remember to secure valuables out of sight and lock your doors and windows before you leave your home, motel or vehicle to minimise the chances of your property being stolen.”

“Road Policing patrols will increase in the city during the day and we urge the public to plan for delays in the morning and evening as racegoers travel to/from Addington Raceway. Police in Canterbury take an anytime anywhere approach to breath testing and this week will be no exception. Every driver stopped should expect to be breath-tested.”

Canterbury we need your help to make sure that everyone is a winner this Cup Day and we all remember it for the right reasons.
