Nelson Women and Children’s Refuge Dinner and Auction

Nelson Women and Children’s Refuge Dinner and Auction

Nelson Women and Children’s refuge is gearing up for a glamour filled dinner and auction evening, that promises a great night out in a good cause.

The evening is the brainchild of local man John Baudier of Yacht Services NZ, who has been a long time supporter of the refuge. John says he came up with the idea for the event because the refuge provides such a vital service in Nelson.

“Last year Nelson Women's Refuge provided services to 285 women and 165 children affected by domestic violence in our region. They’ve had hard times of late with a change of board and reduced access to funding,” he said. “I’m really heartened by how people want to help and have swung in behind this event.”

Refuge director Katie O’Donnell says community help is vital. “The government funding only covers only about 60 percent of our costs. We rely heavily on the community to support us through attending events like this.”

The dinner, at the Boathouse on November 25, will be prepared by chef Andy Paul from Nelson’s Yello Cafe who will serve up an ‘alternate drop’ of chicken breast or salmon, with vegetables and salad, followed by dessert. Items up for auction include romantic getaways, trips with Wilson’s Abel Tasman, restaurant vouchers, art, athletic clothing and kite surfing lessons.

Speaking at the event will be Nelson’s Mayor Rachel Reece, refuge director Katie O’Donnell and CEO Ang Jury. A representative from Nelson police will be there, and presenting the evening will be actress Nancy Sullivan of Nickelodeon (Drake and Josh) fame. Familiar faces from Nelson’s busking scene will be providing musical entertainment.

The Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge dinner and auction evening is at The Boathouse, Wakefield Quay, Nelson, 7pm on 25 November, doors open at 6.30. Tickets are $50 from Yello Cafe on Trafalgar Street, The Swedish Bakery on Bridge Street, The Boat House on Wakefield Quay, Yacht Services New Zealand on Akersten Street or via phone (tickets will be delivered) at 0210785118.
